Field Day 2026
Field day is an annual event/exercise promoted and supported by the Amateur Radio Relay League the national association for amateur radio operators in the USA. Field Day is an opportunity to set up radio equipment in abnormal places using abnormal methods to simulate emergency situations. It is also a great opportunity to set up in public view and demonstrate for our local community just what it is that we as " hams" do.
The Greyhound Amateur Radio Club Field Day2026 was held at the RCEC Plaza on the corner of Main Street and First street right in downtown Portales, New Mexico! We had an absolute blast, we fought for 143 contacts all over North America, had multiple visitors stop in, and we even had our very own VIP guest Mayor Mike Davidson stop in! What an event, keep an eye out for upcoming public activity days in the future to get your opportunity to come out and get on the air!
2026 Theme
A National Resource
The national theme for field day this year is " A National Resource”. Amateur radio has been a public service since its inception. Hams show up for their communities every day all over the nation bringing their personal equipment and hard learned communication skills to serve whenever we are needed. Hams have been here for our communities through hurricanes, tornadoes, wild fires, earthquakes, landslides, and any other manner of disaster imaginable. We don’t only show up for emergencies though! Sometimes Hams help out with things like parades, fairs, festivals and other positive community events as well.
WHY?
Thats a great question, We do this both to advertise ourselves and our hobby, and to prepare ourselves for a true emergency situation when regular methods of communication may be unavailable. Many people today rely on cellular phones without knowing how insecure they truly are, many disaster areas have experience in going days into weeks without regular communication methods. Many hurricane prone areas have large radio groups that train and specialize in supporting their local governments and have great relationships with the public for the reason of providing reliable communications for both health and welfare messaging as well as emergency traffic during times of need.
